To me, 'My December', especially in Kelly's case, is a time of reflection. In Dec, it's the end of the year, a time to reflect on all that has happened. It doesn't necessarilly mean Kelly's album contains stories from the 'year', but it's just a reflection.

Here are a few *other* songs that use the months of a year as a metaphor for a lifetime or the end of something, and which also allude to the melancholy quality of the "December" that sometimes happens . . .

Time, Time, Time
See what's become of me
While I look around for my possibilities
I was so hard to please
Look around,
Leaves are brown,
And the sky is a hazy shade of winter
. . Hang on to your hopes, my friends
That's an easy thing to say
But if your hopes should pass away
Simply pretend that you can build them again
Look around,
The grass is high,
The fields are ripe,
It's the springtime of my life
Look around,
Leaves are brown,
And the sky is a hazy shade of winter
Look around,
Leaves are brown,
There's a patch of snow on the ground
(A Hazy Shade of Winter... Paul Simon)

Try to remember the kind of September
When life was slow and oh, so mellow.
Try to remember the kind of September
When grass was green and grain was yellow.
Try to remember the kind of September
When you were a tender and callow fellow.
Try to remember, and if you remember,
then follow, follow.
Try to remember when life was so tender
When no one wept except the willow.
Try to remember when life was so tender
When dreams were kept beside your pillow.
Try to remember when life was so tender
When love was an ember about to billow.
Try to remember and if you remember
then follow, follow.
***Deep in December it's nice to remember
Although you know the snow will follow.
Deep in December it's nice to remember
Without a hurt the heart will hollow.
Deep in December
it's nice to remember
The fire of September that made you mellow.
Deep in December our hearts should remember
and follow, follow.
(Try to Remember, from The Fantastiks...by Harvey Schmidt)

Oh, it's a long, long time from May to December,
But the days grow short when you reach September.
When the autumn weather turns the leaves to flame,
One hasn't got time for the waiting game
Oh, the days dwindle down to a precious few
September, November
And these few precious days I'll spend with you
These precious days I'll spend with you
(September Song ...Anderson/Weill )

Seems the love I've known has always been
The most destructive kind
Yes, that's why now I feel so old
Before my time.
Yesterday when I was young
The taste of life was sweet as rain upon my tongue.
I teased at life as if it were a foolish game,
The way the evening breeze may tease a candle flame.
The thousand dreams I dreamed, the splendid things I planned
I'd always built to last on weak and shifting sand.
I lived by night and shunned the naked light of the day
And only now I see how the years ran away.
Yesterday when I was young
So many happy songs were waiting to be sung,
So many wild pleasures lay in store for me
And so much pain my dazzled eyes refused to see.
I ran so fast that time and youth at last ran out,
I never stopped to think what life was all about
And every conversation I can now recall
Concerned itself with me and nothing else at all.
Yesterday the moon was blue
And every crazy day brought something new to do.
I used my magic age as if it were a wand
And never saw the waste and emptiness beyond.
The game of love I played with arrogance and pride
And every flame I lit too quickly, quickly died.
The friends I made all seemed somehow to drift away
And only I am left on stage to end the play.
There are so many songs in me that won't be sung,
I feel the bitter taste of tears upon my tongue.
The time has come for me to pay for
Yesterday when I was young...
(Yesterday, When I was Young... by Herbert Kretzmer - Charles Aznavour... sung by Roy Clark)

My December refers to a bleak period of life, possibly before death, when the heart has frozen and everything is depressing, cold and grim. Linkin park sings:
this is my december
this is my time of the year
this is my december
this is all so clear
this is my december
this is my snow covered home
this is my december
this is me alone
and i
just wish that i didnt feel
like there was something i missed
and i
take back all the things i said
to make you feel like that
and i
just wish that i didnt feel
like there was something i missed
and i
take back all the things i said to you
obviously he is in a dark depression. Consider Shakespeare:
"How like a winter hath my absence been From thee, the pleasure of the fleeting year! What freezings have I felt, what dark days seen! What old December's bareness everywhere!" Sonnet XCVII

i will guess a dark time or period in the person's life which changed them for the better or worse..some hard to deal with stuff and a phase and part of life: may it be stress, love, relationships, etc..the significance of it is that the person like artists that you mentioned earlier tell about the hard facts and diffcult times by doing something therapeutic such as writing a song and then singing it..it is sort of dealing with a fear until you get over it..they want their fans to understand that they are human and go through hard times and have ups and downs..hope that helped
