Remember Jame's Taylors' song "I've seen fire, I've seen rain"? Of coures he is using poetic license and means lightning and rain (you can't see thunder) .

Consider this when you first notice a storm you will hear thunder first, then later notice more lightning. Even a deaf person can feel thunder.

However the ancients know that the two thunder and lightning usually are associated together. Zeus the most powerful Greek God throws lightning. In theory it is logical that lightning is the more active phenomena, you would rather avoid being near lightning. So a scientist or someone who respects lightning would put it first, but more fearful folks would rather put lightning second.

Otherwise the sequence in which we phrase thunder and lightning is arbitrary and you could argue either position, just that I have been using thunder and lightning more often.....

Yes I am afraid of thunder and lightning, but I am OK with them on my sound machine but not the real live ones. I am afraid of thunder nowadays its because I had a nightmare about ghost rider a couple years ago. I hate it when thunder storms start at nighttime, I'm worried they're going to knock out the power and stuff.

Why doesn't WHO say lightning & thunder?!?!

The real question is:

Like many things there is just a set way people say things like: 'mum and dad' 'brother and sister' . However I often argue with my partner about whether it's 'fork and knife' or 'knife and fork.' lol.
