I'm in my junior year of high school right now and I'm interested in being a pharmacist. What should I major in college? I know science, but does it matter what kind of science? Where should I volunteer? I'm taking AP chemistry, AP statistics coming fall and AP calculus in my senior year..is this a good start?

You should major in pre-pharmacy or get hard-science degree, preferably chemistry or biology.

Don't worry about volunteering just yet.

As for the AP classes you are taking, you are doing exactly the right thing. You need to take AP english also with the emphasis on writing. And learning Spanish would be a big plus!

Unfortunately the info on the ehow site is not correct, so I suggest you pass that by!

You can get up to date info about pharmacy by connecting to the website of the Assocation of American Colleges of Pharmacy AACP - they have links to every accredited College of Pharmacy in the USA. You can go directly to the Colleges of Pharmacy near you, or ones you are interested in, and see exactly how their programs work.

Pharmacy is a great career. It sounds from what you say about your courses that you are headed in the right direction. AP chem, stats and calc will give you a very solid basis for your prerequisite courses when you get to university. And then you will do well in those courses and have an excellent chance to be accepted into pharm school.

Good luck - you are going to have a great career and make a PILE of money :)

A pre-pharmacy program in college is going to involve some chemistry, some biology, and then mostly general education type of classes. You could do pre-pharmacy as either a chemistry or biology major. Volunteering is fine if you don't have any other activities, but the biggest thing will be your grades and test scores. For pre-pharmacy you don't need to go to an Ivy League university either. Your run-of-the-mill state college is going to be just fine.
