I know it is said that Edwards' wife told him to run regardless of her situation. I would have a VERY difficult time voting for someone that would leave his wife in her condition while he travels around the country in what could be her final bit of time. If Edwards doesn't even care about his wife enough to stay with her, how can we trust him to care for our country?

Don't tell me her "type of cancer" will allow her to live for YEARS." I work in cancer research. When cancer metastasizes to the bone, it is stage 4 and VERY serious, so don't tell me they expect her to have 10 yrs etc. You don't know this. This COULD (quite realistically, though not definitely) be her last year.

Um, I do know his wifes diagnosis... Metastatic breast cancer. When cancer metastasized to the bone, it is always stage 4. That is the defintion.

Source: I am a cancer researcher. Did I not say that?

I have a problem with the way he made his money ambulance chasing. They made the decision; it's their choice. I wouldn't have made that choice, but it's wasn't mine to make.

No, not on this issue. I think that Elizabeth Edwards is a very strong woman who deserves her own credence for making her own decision about this. If she truly feels that he is the best candidate for President, and this is what will make HER happy, by her own admission, then why should he overrule her and quit? If you are a cancer researcher then you are aware of the effects of stress and depression on cancer victims. If her husband quitting the race because of her illness would make her more unhappy than him continuing doesn't she have something to say about that? And isn't it more beneficial to her to have what she sees as an ultimate purpose to their lives? Perhaps she feels that quitting is giving into the cancer. My aunt has non-Hodgkin's and I know that she suffers more stress when people try to coddle her because of her illness. She prefers to carry on with her life as normally as possible and deal with it privately in her own way. That is her right, and it is also Elizabeth Edward's right to make that decision and to expect both her and her husband be treated with respect for the very difficult decision they made together in the end.

Could it be that they share hopes and dreams that extend beyond her? I have no doubt that he loves his wife very much, and that she, whether she lives one year or twenty, hopes he can help reshape this country into the place of hope it once was, and not just a piggy bank for the rich or a theocracy for the evangelical right.
How shallow is it to think her only possible source of happiness is his presence? I suspect she is rich in friends, family and advocations that keep her plenty busy and satisfied.

Kacey...you are incorrect. I worked for hospice and just because cancer metastisizes does not mean it is in stage 4. Edwards wife said at the press conference that her doctors had told her she could live for years in her current condition. In any case, it is their choice to make, and you are a diehard Republican just looking to use someone's misfortunes to score political points.

I have no respect for John Edwards for many other reasons.
But to answer your question, a president must put the country ahead of his family. If a family member of the president is kidnapped, that family member must be regarded as expendable, no matter how cruel the torture.

Would you have a problem with it if he was required to travel for any other job in order to support his family? And let's face it---a presidential bid is a move for the ultimate job.
If Elizabeth has no problem with it, why should the rest of us? I don't know that I'd vote for him myself...he's not liberal enough for my taste...but how is it anyone else's business outside of the members of his own family?
Don't you have anything better to worry about?

sp the treatment of your wife correlates to your running the country? I dont like Edwards, but I got to admit, this comparison is skewed.

"Keep his personal life out of it?" How do you do that when he keeps bringing it up? He's all about being the sympathy candidate, which is how he won all his malpractice suits in court and got rich off of medical insurance settlements.

The guy is a Snake Oil Salesman and, based on the amount of supporters on this board, it sounds like he still has a lot of customers.

BTW (from another thread): "Won a suit for a girl whose intestines literally got sucked out by sitting on a pump in a kiddie pool?" Some one has a good sense of physics when they go spreading THAT story.

I think it is a personal decision the family made. I think she wanted him to run. I do not have a problem with his morals at all.
