Honestly, why does anyone think that someone would CHOOSE to put themselves in an alienated minority? I'm looking for an actual real answer here. Don't get me wrong, I'm gay and proud and I have nothing to be ashamed of, and I have no desire to be anything else. But looking from an outsiders perspective. Why would someone say, "hey that group is persecuted and mocked, where can I sign up"????? Or "hmmm, how can I narrow my dating pool down to only 10-15% of the population? I know I'll be gay!!" It makes no sense. It's not logical. I know, I'm about to get a lot of bigoted, bible quoting haters in here who are going to try to berate and belittle me and tell me I'm a demon but I don't care. If I can find one person who can give a succint and intelligent answer to this question, it would be worth it. But you can't because there isn't one. It all extends from prejudice and fear of the unknown and archaic religious beliefs that don't allow for scientific fact. We're born gay!!!

Wide Awake - Truthfully, no I expect no logic. And so far, I haven't been disappointed. :) That one about it being a test from god is a new one though.

For people who have such an opinion, I challenge them to change their heterosexual orientation to homosexual. Right now, on demand. It's a choice, right?

Why would someone choose to be marginalized, to have hate crimes perpetrated against them, to be discriminated against, if a simple choice was all it took NOT to experience these things?

they are conducting studies all the time to see if it is something one has inside that is actually chemistry. But from what part that chemistry has they can not decipher it..

It is a fact you are born the way you are.. If a person is born with both genitalia.. A doctor can not tell what sex they are. It is a fact that many doctors will make the choice as to what sex the baby "should"be.. But If the person was a girl on the outside and they decided to close up her vigina.. Or if the person was a boy and they cut off his outdoor pluming..

They grow and say.. Hey I am not a boy.. I am a girl.. Or visa versa.. People are fools. If was not for this type of birth no one would have ever understood..
Aw you poor thing. I think that people in general can be so barbaric.. They want to quote the bible.yeah yeah we have heard it all before hu.. I am tired of it all.

Hey you people that call yourselves Christians..that say you believe.. what is the greatest gift besides Jesus and the holy spirit that was given to us all...

You know Jesus is Love..he is the ONLY person we answer to in the end. Who here with out sin cast the first stone (remember that one) Judge and so you shall be judged. Love one another as he has loved you. Let no man say I am better then them..are we not all full of sin..Jesus came to save us all.

But even back in the day people hated... I do not think it will ever stop. Just pray for those that sin against you. Judgment on another human in our Lord is an abomination and is a sin in the eyes of the Lord Himself..

I believe that being homosexual can be a choice. I know a man who approached a male to female transvestite I know and told him that he wanted to try sex with a man.
If that tranvestite had been homosexual, if they had done sexual things together, the man might have enjoyed it, and realized he had homosexual tendancies.
The sexual urge is a huge thing for individuals, we are all brought up to believe that sex is usually between different genders. I know from personal experience that at puberty I felt urges for both genders, but I only considered same sex, because I doubted I would be attractive to someone of the opposite sex. Your question states why I didn't develop more like you.
I do not know for sure, but I doubt we are born destined to be either heterosexual, or homosexual, but this does not mean we choose who we are attracted to.
When a Baby comes into the world it is bombarded with information, it learns at an enourmous rate. Young children are not prejudiced against anyone. First we learn what we like, only later do we gain opinions of right or wrong, by the time of our puberty our prejudices are largely established.

I believe that every baby has the potential to enjoy every type of sexual contact, but by the time of its puberty, many ideas of right and wrong, and not wanting to be like that come into the mix.

A good example is transvestites, some transvestites believe they were born that way. But as someone asked Would there be transvestites if there were no clothes? How can the human baby's mind be born with knowledge of the social structure that humans have developed?

You won't like my final points;
I don't believe you were born destined to be homosexual, but I believe that from an early age you had gained the experience which would lead you to develop in that way.

If there wasn't any prejudice against homosexual activities, if society encouraged full acceptance of ourselves and everyone else, if society never encouraged single partners, we would probably all be enjoying a much more varied sexual existence.

I dont think it is a choice for those who are. I think it is a matter of some kind of recessive trait. I think the people who do believe that are the kind of people who think "where can I sign up" but are too chicken to do it think about it back in the early new testament why would you change your religeon knowing you would be stoned, middle ages why would you proclaim you are a witch? why would you tell your husband you slept with someone else in biblical times knowing he would punish or kill you, I think (just guessing) there are recessive genes for homosexuality, and there are also recessive genes where people crave to be a martyr- that they crave the attention. these wanna be martyrs think everyone thinks that way much in the way a paranoid person thinks everyone is out to get them and so they think it must a choice. they should be pitied these fanatics who think their god only loves a small percent of the population and sends the rest to burn in hell. they are pathetic. they also get off a bit on being judgemental as then they dont have to focus on their boring middle class lives where noone really cares as they are trying so hard to fit into their society. a person who finds love no matter where it may be is luckier than a lonely judgemental person who never does but is never ridiculed and by god I hope my children find love no matter where it may be. I know I will support them in their decision. I hope I answered your question with what I believe anyways. Sorry it isnt terribly profound I just think they people who have to tear others down to feel better have to be genetically programmed to be as cruel as they are like a birth defect only in the genes after all they have shown that strong tempers and some behaviors are genetic.

Ok, I'm NOT a bible-thumper; for me, it's more a matter of the "ick factor".....men and WOMEN'S bodies were designed by NATURE to fit!

As for it being a choice, OF COURSE it IS a choice!!!! Why do I say this? Well, you hit the nail on the head, yourself! You stated you have "no desire to be anything else". This seems to be the general consensus amongst gays. Even if they were offered a foolproof remedy for their gayness, they'd STILL decline the offer! What does THAT say?! It says that for whatever reason, they are gay because they are hooked on gay sex, and they LIKE IT!!!! So why not just come right out and admit it that you CHOOSE that "lifestyle"?! By not doing so, you are trying to convince others that you have NO free will, and are virtually powerless in your actions. All it is is a justification FOR your actions! But like you also said, you know others don't approve, but you DON'T CARE!!!!

"Born gay" is only a cop-out, plain and simple. As for gays being a minority, I don't THINK so! Now that it is SO encouraged for everyone to just be gay, everyone and his uncle are all jumping on that bandwagon. As a straight woman who has been searching in vain for YEARS to meet even ONE straight, decent MAN, I can tell you for sure that they are becoming EXTINCT!!!!

Lisa B, you are a liar. I don't believe you.\

and you who posted "
Because it is caused by an influence of some type. Could be a look, a brush, a giggle, anything that could catch the eye of the beholder, even if that means it is a child. A child can become attracted by an influence, maybe even there own ideas like gender nonconformity causes many to become gay
"
you are an idiot, please go back to school.

Being gay is not a life choice. It is simply a state of being, neither positive or negative. Anyone who believes otherwise is either a religious fanatic, ignorant, or deeply homophobic, and living with the fear that they are one also.

I believe being gay has to do with genetics. I mean if you're a gay guy and you TRY liking women but can't, what can you do?

I'm straight. I mean, I can't just get up in the morning and say: Hey, I feel like having the hots for other girls from now on! It doesn't work!

First let me say that I believe being gay is NOT a choice, but what about Bisexual people? Is that a choice? Not that I really care. I was just wondering because your question asked why would people CHOOSE that.
