I've stayed at just about every major hotel on the strip and my recommendation for you would be Hooters. The location is great. It is only 1 block off the strip and directly across from the back of the (very long) MGM Grand - where the monorail station is. They completely remodeled it less than two years ago (it was the old Hotel San Remo). The rooms are basic, but everything is new and very clean (and I'm very picky). I've seen the rate as low as $59/night in the middle of the week. Make sure you eat the breakfast buffet at the Dam restaurant. It's just a little diner kind of place, nothing fancy, but cheap (about $11 incl. beverage) and has the best bacon I have ever tasted in my life.
I last went to Vegas 3 months ago...I stayed 3 nights at Hooters and 2 nights at Paris. The room at Hooters was better. Paris was dirty and twice as expensive.

In Vegas, all ya gotta do is stay away from the newest most fancy ones that are in big demand. You could stay ay The Riviera, Circus Circus, The Frontier for about 30 bucks a night...all perfectly fine hotesl with pools and all the perks. You might also look into Excalibur, which is right next to the Trop, and New York New York, and that is also real cheap.

The better hotels will cost you depending on your preferences. Look for packaged deals at the airline or travel websites.
Personally, I've gone with Harrahs properties (Harrahs, Caesars Palace, Bally's, Flamingo, Paris, Rio (other side of I-15 across from Caesars Palace). I prefer buffets and Rio has one of the best selections.
I normally get comped for meals, hotel, shows... so you might want to look into their Total Rewards program that allows you to use "points" that you accumulate when you gamble at any Harrahs property.
I've stayed at Treasure Island, Venetian, Bellagio as well. If you can afford it, these are great locations at the upper half of the strip near shopping (keeps my wife happy).
I've stayed at Excalibur, MGM, Monte Carlo, Luxor at the southern end of the strip....they're all fine but you have drive, catch the bus/monorail to get to the North side for shows/events on the north side of the strip. Walking in the summer is a chore at 115 degrees.
There's are also the downtown hotels. Most are half the price of strip hotels, and you can get the same buffet entrees, but personally I prefer the Strip.
Good Luck and have fun.

Circus Circus is about the same as Riviera but it's always been cheaper. You can also bring your own booze to the pool at Circus Circus so you save money there too!!
