Is it the fact they are making the top 1% of the rich wealthier or is it bloodlust brought on by religion and mental illness?

I think it's hubris.
These wealthy, prominent people are still 'real people' when it comes right down to it. Most don't have a clue as to how they achieved such good fortune. All they know is that they're terrified of losing it. So they pound their chests, stomp around in gorilla-like puffery, and will do anything (at any cost) to ensure that their wealth, power and influence doesn't abandon them.
These are people that are terribly insecure, and suffer from "little- peck*r" syndrome. But they don't dare let others know how scared and impotent they really are; so they start unconstitutional, illegal, unjustifiable, immoral 'wars' or do whatever else it takes to keep themselves on the top rung of the social-economic-political ladders because they'd be unable to survive without their wealth and privilege. -RKO- 06/27/07

A smug, hyena-like leader being handled by some of Satan's own demons doesn't help the situation either.
A sense of entitlement and stubborn nationalism make it worse.
And don't get me started on this phenomenon of the hard-wiring in their brains that labels every non-white, non-straight, non-christian individual a "terrorist."
