when in doubt, use the following foolproof method for a conversion:
put the unit in parentheses and substitue with a conversion for that unit.
for example, how many square inches in a square foot.
since 1 ft = 12 in
1 (ft)^2 = 1 (12 in)^2 = 1*(12)^2*(in)^2
(note that both the value - 12 - AND the unit - in - were squared)
= 1*(144)*(in)^2=144in^2
and since 1 m = 100 cm use
1(m)^2 = 1*(100cm)^2 = 1 * (100)^2 * (cm)^2 =10,000cm^2

OK, it is your right to squander your points.
Since 1 foot is 12 inches, 1 sq. ft = 12 x 12 = 144 sq. inches
1 m = 100 cm. So, 1 x 1 m = 1sq.m = 100 x 100 = 10000 sq.cm
