I always feel bad for cheetahs when they are on the hunt. Though they are the fasts land animal they have the suck card when it comes to the hunt. They say that cheetahs are a 50/50 hunter, but in all reality is more like one to two kills out of ten.

The cheetahs have a few strikes against them.....

Because of only being able to run their top speed for a short moment they have to be able to stalk their prey within less than 100 feet before they can begin the run. That alone can be tough.

Once the hunt begins the cheetah only as a short window to catch up to the game. If they are lucky enough to catch it, unlike its other feline family members it is only armed with teeth rather than teeth and claws. Again, knocking up the difficulty a bit more.

Even then if they are able to make a kill, more often then not it gets stolen by lions, leopards and hyenas.

Poor cheetahs.... poor cheetahs.

cheetahs are sprinters they can fail 20 times before catching prey. Most of the time after 2-3 times the cheetah has to take a rest. the cheetah will succeed 1 to 20 you would want every bit of the meat you could get from the animal you killed. Most of the time they rely on there tail for balance.

Well big cats like lions and even cheetahs do have problems catching their prey at times.Their success rate is actually pretty low contrary to what some people might think. There are days in which they completely fail to catch any prey at all.

However like another answerer said cheetahs are sprinters and they if they do not catch their prey during the time they reach high speeds they are pretty likely to tire easily and therefore retreat.

Big cats like lions and cheetahs don't often do many runs if they keep failing. In times of famine they are likely to chase after easy prey like hares and avoid other animals like gazelles because they need to conserve energy. At times the cheetahs might get lucky and find a half eaten carcass. If it is light enough they will climb up the tree and take the carcass with him to eat peacefully

Hope this answered your question

Cheetahs, like all big cats are sprinters. They do not have the lung capacity to chase animals down for long periods of time. If a cheetah does not get its prey after the second try, it might take a rest, get a drink, or it might go out for a third run, depending how hot it is out and other varibales that have to be taken into consideration.

Cheetahs are sprinters, not long distant runners. If they don't get their prey during the intial sprint, they are sure to tire. After a few trys, they probably have to rest before they can give it a go.

I can't recall the exact statistics but i'm thinking that statistically speaking cheetahs are only successful about one in 10 chases. Someone may have a more accurate number but I'm thinking it was around that number. That means that the vast majority will fail and only a few will be successful.
