You may need to just walk into the manager's office and let them know that you can no longer work in such an environment, that your work is important to you and you are afraid the quality is being threatened because of the unfair workload. Be honest with them. If they truly care, they will accommodate you because they don't want to lose some one dedicated. Then again, they may not care and you may need to look for something else, for your sake.

The key is to communicate how you feel and find out where they stand and deal with what comes of it.

As a former Human Resource Manager and Supervisor, I completely understand and symphatize with your situation. You sound like an employee who cares about your work and are not getting any assistance or support right now. This is what I would suggest - Keep a log from the time you come to work until the time you check out. Record what work you are doing and how long it took you to do it. ****STOP WORKING THROUGH LUNCH!!!*** It is really against the labor law. You should have 30 minutes at least for lunch or some time away from your desk. Additionally, the time away will give you an opportunity to reflect.

After you have monitored your work for at least one week, request a few moments with your manager/supervisor. Make sure you have a copy of this for her. If you can still see that you may have more work than you can complete within the time you should, your manager will be able to see this from your documentation. Don't whine or complain, but let her know that 1) you want to continue to be a top performer but that you feel based upon this evaluation, that you are unable to do this for the following reasons - make sure your reasons are sound (do you have too many phone interruptions? do other employees consume a lot of your time? what causes you to rush? do you prioritize your work in order of necessity? can you take work home? ) Managers cannot keep telling you to "make time' if you can show there is no time left to make. Ask her for suggestions to help you. That's what she is there for. You are part of a team and surely the head of the team wants to ensure that all its members are functioning completely. If all else fails and you are unable to gain support and some mental ease - you might consider other employment. I hope that this is not the case. But good luck to you. (do you have friends on the job? perhaps you can spend a little time observing someone else at work - that might help you get some ideas also)

Time to step on your mgr's toes and go over her head to her immediate supervisor, the highest authorative position the better, and voice your concerns and opinion. If that doesn't get anywhere, then don't complete your tasks or work load. Leave it for someone else to finish. If you've been with the company long enough (6 mos) you'll be able to file for unemployment and look for a better position.
I run the office for 3 atty's by myself and it is quite stressful. 2 atty's appreciate me and all that I do and the other sr. partner questions my work load and doesn't want to compensate me properly, if the work isn't done in the regular 40 hrs, then it doesn't get done. I do not get much of lunch either, I usually pick at things all throughout the day. I use to come in on weekends to stay caught up but don't waste my precious down time anymore.
My outlook is that I can leave anytime and they would be up a creek without a paddle. This DOES relieve some of my stress. Best of luck to you.

Have you gone to the very top as far as management is concerned? Outline your job duties and how long it takes to do each duty CORRECTLY. I would voice my concern of mistakes costing even more time and should you become ill due to stress levels (which is very common) even more time will be lost. Be ready to tell them which duties should be outsourced to someone else and why and be ready to tell them what you feel you can do within your 8 hour work day without feeling totally stressed out (bad for your heart and blood pressure) and also being able to perform the work correctly.

Have all of these things outlined on paper to give to your superviser, their supervisor, and etc., all the way to the top.

Good luck.

If you are really giving it your all, then that really is the best you can do, and if your supervisors and managers don't see that then they are not doing their properly.

You must try your best to organize your work, and try to get caught up. Go in 15 mins early and make a list of what you need to do that day, then organize it so that you are doing the most important things first and so on.

If you do this and you are not caught up after 2 weeks then your work load is to high and you need to speak with a manager about it. If they wont listen put your concerns in writing. When there is writen proof of something people tend to pay extra attention.

Be Well

What you need to do is decide as to whether you work to live, or live to work. If your job is making you ill and getting you down as much as what you say, leave it's only a job at the end of the day, and with what you have told us about your boss, it seems that things are not going to change. Don't let this employer grind you down any further. I doubt that she sits and worries about how she has treated you, when she goes home each night.

Quit, Sue. For goodness sakes! The world is filled with jobs, and obviously that is not a good one for you.

Maybe if you stop posting questions on Y!A when you should be working you might be able to get all your work done. Either get the work done and stop complaining or find another job. It's that simple.
