Way back in the 70s, the Formula was the better performer, given equal engine options. Why? The T/A package added signifigant weight to the car. That changed quite a bit in the 80s and 90s. In those years, perofrmance was relatively equal.
For my money, I'd rather have the T/A. You pay more up front, but it is more valuable at resale time, too.

I don't know what year your looking at but I've had two 87's, one a trans am gta, the other a firebird formula. Both cars had the same motor (tpi 350), same trans, susp, rear axle, gear ratio, and brakes. The only difference between the two was cosmetic, with the trans am having all the options, ground effects, nicer rims, etc.. The formula was faster, tho, because w/o all that stuff it was lighter. Both were awsome cars, can't go wrong either way IMHO.

What model yr are we we talkin about here???
The forth generation f-bodies were pretty much all the same except, for the trim package. You can check the ROP code(from the factory) from the door jam or clove door on both w/ the link below.
Personally, I'd take the more aggressive TransAm package, in the forth gen. models.;) Which cam w/ the upper lever spoiler on the rear and did NOT have those cheezy lookin round packin lites in the front facia. I use to own(now totaled, in 01) a black 98 M6 TransAm....hints The Keeper;) Then, it got totaled from fender bender where the insurance co. went overboard, IMO.
Good luck!

TA and formula get the TA and if you can get the TA-WS-6 Each grade has bigger performance items wneel bearings brake rotors and rear disk brakes the WS-6 is more valuable. Dont mess with TA's with gaps between front door and front fenders that are wide at the bottom that means that the car was lifted incorrectly and both front fenders are broken at the bottom. About $600 a side to repair

As long as you are comparing cars with the same motors, trans. and rear ends then nothing. What is usually the case is the TA will have a bigger motor or a higher ratioed rear end which make it more livelier. The rest is up to you to find out what is in the cars you're looking at. Good luck.

there's a little difference in the horse power on them and also a lot of difference in the trim package they come with ,the most part is in the horse power the actual trans-am ran about 20 more horse power and had a different gear ratio to it,other than that there pretty much the same car, good luck with it hope this helps.
