13/18 - 4/9 = In order to subtract fractions the bottom (denominator - d for down) has to be the same. The 9 can be changed to make it an 18 by multiplying it by 2. But if you multiply the bottom of a number you have to multiply the top (numerator) by the same number. You will multiply the fraction 4/9 by 2/2 The reason the top and bottom have to be the same is 2/2 = 1. You really have the same fraction you just multiplied it by a fraction that equals 1. So the 4/9 now equals 8/18 but it is in fact still the same value....just can be reduced to 4/9. 13/18 - 4/9 * 2/2 = Note: when multiplying fractions multiply straight across top and bottom 13/18 - 4*2 / 9*2 = 13/18 - 8/18 = Note: when adding/subtracting fractions the bottom stays the same (they must match) and the top changes. 13 -8 / 18 = 5/8 I know this was REALLY over explained. But if you print this it can help you with fractions.

(12 2/9) - (6 5/6) =
(12 4/18) - (6 15/18) =
(11 22/18) - (6 15/18) =
5 7/18 = [5(18) + 7] / 18 = 97 / 18.

[You were only off on the denominator.]
