Internal. Before the egg is laid, there is a time when the shell is not yet hard. That is when it is fertilized. By the time it has a hard shell, NOTHING is supposed to go through the shell -- it's there to protect the egg.

Has to be internal to achieve fertilization before the shell is formed.

I thought snakes had both external and internal fertilization.
