WASHINGTON (June 27) -- The CIA worked with three American mobsters in a botched "gangster-type" attempt to assassinate Cuban leader Fidel Castro in the early 1960s, according to documents released by the CIA on Tuesday.
The agency's leaders determined "a sensitive mission requiring gangster-type action" was needed. "The mission target was Fidel Castro," the document said.
The CIA contacted Johnny Roselli, believed to have been a high-ranking member of the Mafia and the person who controlled all the ice-making machines on the Las Vegas strip.
There were concerns that foreigners might try to disrupt the Republican and Democratic National Conventions in 1972, and one memo said ex-Beatle John Lennon had given money to an anti-war group.
There are also details on such Cold War matters as the three-year incarceration of KGB defector Yuriy Ivanovich Nosenko.
The agency was convinced Nosenko, who defected in 1964, was still working for the KGB but was unable to prove it "even after a long period of hostile interrogation."

Unfortunately the CIA has become weak and docile. They used to go out there and do what was necessary to protect America
Now they have a bunch of snivelling staff lawyers telling them cant do this, cant do that
pathetic

Probably there are both good and bad people in the CIA, as there are everywhere else. Whatever they do, some of it's bound to be helpful to national security, some of it's bound to be dead wrong, and a lot of it is probably just muddling around botching up stuff, getting hijacked by Vice Presidents for nefarious purposes, and so on. I'm not a big fan of the CIA, since it seems like all their foreign "guys gone wild" like Noriega, bin Laden, Qaddafi, etc. caused a lot of problems for everyone and gave this country a black eye. When you read about their shenanigans, it always sounds like the CIA gave all the corrupted evil bums a lot of money and power, while they harmed decent, honest and helpful people. But of course, you are not reading about everything the CIA does. Some of it has to be worthwhile, doesn't it?

As part of our federal government, the CIA still has a responsibility to answer to the American people. Now it has 'come clean' by exposing the 'family jewels'. What makes us think that the agency won't continue to do its espionage work without the people's knowledge? And maybe if the U.S.A. would show a little more trust and good faith in others around the globe, others around the globe would show a little more trust and faith in the U.S.A. For those who argue that "they're always bad guys out there who can't be trusted", I just have one response:
"When you point your finger at someone else, there are three fingers pointing back at you." Skulduggery, secret spy agencies, and government-sanctioned killing machines are not the path to world peace and harmony.

All these dirty little secrets released, man the libs are gonna have a field day with this. The fact is, they aren't bad things at all!
Fidel Castro- bad dude, pointed nukes at us, why wouldn't we try to take him out? And if we can get the mob to do it thats fine less light shining on the us.
3 year incarceration of a KGB agent, big whoop. The man is an enemy of the U.S. Send him to Club Gitmo with love.
Intercepting messages from Red China. CHINA IS THE ENEMY
Listening in on radical groups- they could become terrorists for the commies!!!
I wish the CIA still did things like this, now its full of lawyers and oversight committees from the bums in congress. For instance, they had a plan to flood Iraq with faulty IED detonators that would blow up the terrorist, but the laaawwwwyyyyerrrs thought they didn't have the autthhhhooooorrrity to do so. WHAT?!?!? KILL THE JIHADISTS CIA!! THATS YOUR JOB PROTECT AMERICAN INTERESTS!! WE ARE INTERESTED IN THE LIVES OF OUR SOLDIERS DANG IT!!! AND WHY DID YOU WAIT ENDLESSLY FOR CLINTON TO SIGN THE KILL ORDER ON OSAMA JUST DO IT TENET!!

Most people don't understand that in order to protect a society that certain representatives of that society must be allowed to break all its laws.
Assassination of key people is a fact of reality. It is okay if you think we shouldn't use that tactic, but I *guarantee* that other nations use it when they need to.
Back to the question....no, the CIA isn't the organization it used to be. Too much light and attention has been shed on them in the last 15 years, making them less effective than they used to be.

I think it is business as usual. I would give to see the CIA records now-a-days. I'm sure they have just as much illegal activity going on and they have recorded it all.

That was thirty or forty years ago. Unfortunately , because of all the prying eyes and Woodwood & Bernstein wannabes they can't do their jobs. They are different.

High government agencies will always have cover-ups, mis-information, etc.....
With that said, we will never know exactly what government agencies are up to and how they really conduct there business.
