There are ways to remember how to multiply things like this, one answer, gave you a rule of thumb for it. But, why bother, you may just forget the rule. Why not just set this up like any other multiplication problem?

For example,

---23
X 14
------- How would you multiply these two numbers? You do your two factors the same way. Really. Here's why.

23 = (20 + 3)
X14 = X (10 + 4)

So we have 10X20 + 10X3 + 4X20 + 4X3 = 200+30+80+12 = 322, which is exactly how you'd multiply (6r + 3s) (2r -2s)...just like you'd do numbers. So set your two factors up like numbers.

(6r + 3s)
X(2r -2s) so that...

2r X 6r + 2r X 3s + (-2s X 6r) + (-2s X 3s) = ? You can add them up. [Make sure you keep the minus sign in -2s.]

There you have it, no special rules to remember; just the rule for multiplying numbers and factors.

(6r + 3s) (2r -2s) =
(3)(2r + s)(2)(r - s) =
6(2r + s)(r - s) =
6(2r² - rs - s²) =
12r² - 6rs - 6s².

(6r +3s) (2r -2s)
12r^2 + 6rs - 12rs - 6s^2
12r^2 - 6rs - 6s^2

No, you have to use FOIL
first = 12r*r
outside = 12rs
inside = 6rs
last = 3s*s

add them all up to get 12r*r + 18rs + 3s*s

12 r2 -12 rs + 6 rs - 6 s2

{12 r2 -6 rs - 6 s2} multiply by 6
therefore,
2 r2 -rs -s2

note:
r2 =sqr r
s2 =sqr s
