A 20% reduction yields 88:

x * (1 - 0.20) = 88
x * 0.8 = 88
x = 88/0.8
x = 110

Let
P = presale price
D = discount amount
translation tip:

"20% off sale" means
discount percentage = 20 % of presale price
so,
discount amount = D
D = (20/100) * P = .2P

"a coat is reduced to 88pounds" means
P - D = 88
P - (.2P) = 88
(1 - .2) * P = 88
.8 * P = 88
P = 88 / .8 = 110

presale price = 110 pounds

Let s = pre-sale price of coat

Equation:
s - (0.2x) = $88
0.8s = $88
s = $88 / 0.8
s = $110

Please ask your professor what textbook is he/she is prescribing to you for the whole semester then ask his or anybody else's assistance.

let x be original selling price----
x-x*(20/100)=88
x-x*(1/5) =88
(5x-x)/5=88
x=(88*5)/44
x= 110
