Club soda works great. Just pour a small amount on the spill and blot it up. Do not rub it!
If it doesn't work try vinegar and water. I know that sounds crazy but it works. The vinegar nuetralizes the smell and the vinegar smell goes away in an hour or so.

Give the carpet a really good clean - with a carpet cleaner if you have one or can rent one inexpensively that's the only way to get rid of the smell.
However, if you just want to cover it up - shake'n'vac is good as is febreeze for carpet smells.
