The reason that strawberries have hairs is a matter of natural defence. Since plants are vulnerable and susceptible to being eaten they have to formulate some method to stop this happening. Some are bitter to the taste and some have prickles. Strawberries have neither but are only edible when they ripen. The berry is actually the little seeds on the strawberry and in order to propagate the ripe berry needs to fall off the plant, rot and the seed grow into a new plant. As this is not easy the plant usually multiplies by spreading suckers. However on ripening when the berry is sweet it will then be eaten by animals, including humans. The tiny seeds are not digested and thus when the animal passes faeces the seeds can grow wherever they are deposited. The hairs, during growth, can cause an allergic reaction or irritation to the throat if eaten so their purpose is to stop the berries from being eaten until they are ripe. When this happens the hairs can be easily washed away by rainfall thus leaving the berries available for eating without causing irritation.

Strawberries are not naturally hairy. If they are hairy, it means something is growing on them and I sure wouldn't want to eat one.

They are not hairy, they are fibers from the seeds. It's okay for you to eat "hairy" strawberries they are good for you.

Unfortunately, we cannot ask the strawberries themselves this question, so we can only speculate. Some think the fuzz protects temselves against insects and diseases, others guess it might shield against dehydration and sun.
