To work out MPG you need to know:

The distance travelled between refills
and
The amount of fuel used between refills.

Divide the number of litres of fuel required to fill the car by 4.545 to convert it to (imperial) gallons. Then divide the number of miles by the result. That gives your mpg.

For a cost per mile, you need to include all costs (depreciation of the car, servicing, MOTs, repairs, tyres, fuel, insurance and tax) and divide by the number of miles travelled. You could do this over an annual period, but as some repairs happen less than once a year for many people (e.g. tyres), and annual depreciation is always an estimate, it is better to do for the total time you own the car.

My Renault Mégane 1.9dCi has averaged 49.7mpg (5.7l/100km) since new in March 2003 - and is still improving. The most recent tankful was used at a rate of 60.8mpg (4.6l/100km).

i zero my tripometer when i fill up--
then when it's time to fill up again, i check the tripometer and divide the number of miles traveled by the number of gallons it takes to fill the car back up
if 360 miles traveled and it takes 12 gallons to fill up =30mpg
