A laptop IS a notebook. They are the same.

laptop and notebook are synonymous... laptops used to be luggable machines and more powerful than notebooks, but that's not the case... notebooks can do pretty well anything.

The things they can't do:
upgradability (TV cards, new processors, better video cards, lots of memory etc etc)
Decent ergonomics (screen and keyboard in the right place for you to use them without eyestrain / neck strain / writs strain.
Really big disks

So unless you've got good reason to go for a dinky little portable, I'd say go for a desktop with a nice big screen. It'll be cheaper as well, just not so easy to put in a drawer.
