I had two 3 months old, "red-eyed slider" turtles, i took good care of them and fed them. they seemed to like the sun, so i put them on my balcony for a half a day. I came back to find one dead?! what could be the reason, the sun was not that bad.....

They are very delicate at that age, and don't have much protection against any sun. I always put my reptiles out where there is shade more so than sun, so that they have to choose to go in the sun on their own. Also, make sure they have dry land. I usually put a rock in so the sun hits it and warms the rock up. they then have to climb up on the rock to get the sun.

Reptiles can be pretty fragile and because they cannot regulate their internal temperate, can get overheated very easily. While they do enjoy basking in the sun (and it's good for them), they need to be able to have a cool shady place to retreat to when they get too warm. Leaving the turtles out for several hours was probably a very bad idea and if they didn't have a shady spot to hide in, or enough water, it could have just overheated.

In the future, your turtles should never be left outside unattended for long. It's important that you watch them because so that if there is a problem, you can attend to it quickly.

i don't know. It could be the humidity was too high and it suffocated,or something. But turtles usually live in the wild and are used to the elements like hot sun, humidity, etc, so i'm not sure why that would happen. Unless they usually burrow underground or seek shade to protect them from the weather or that particular type is aquatic/semi-aquatic and needs to always be in or around water and it dehydrated,or something. But i really don't know what could've happened. I'm just sorry you lost your turtle.

3 months old, they are so delicate. Keep them in the shade, in very shallow clean water. Don't bake them in the sun. Please!

I had 2 turtles for 20 years till a car accident laid me up in hospital & they died of neglect. in one month. I will always mourn over them. with sadness.
