It describes someone who is from England. Although england has not been a nation as of 1603, when it was united with scotland, and thus became Great Britain. And became the United Kindom of Great Britain and Ireland in 1707. Most people from England would consider themselves English, rather than British, even though they are both, there is some dispute over who they are. Scottish people would be offended to be called British even though they legally are.

Last time I checked, England was still a country. Great Britain is made up of the countries of England, Scotland, and Wales. I think Ireland is also still included. If you are from England, then you are English or British. If you are from Scotland, then you are either Scottish or British.

English is definitely a nationality.

I should know, I'm Welsh and the b*ggers have been stomping all over my country for centuries.

I would be delighted if there were no such thing as the English - maybe I could have my country back - or at least be able to afford to live in it.

English can be used to describe those who come from England, but Americans are not English...so, yes, it is a nationality, but not one that describes US citizens.

Nemo Credete is correct. "British" can refer to people that are English, Welsh, Northern Irish, or Scottish so what Bob L says is not always true.

Would you believe I'm American? See, we're not all "ignorant," lol.
