I'd say if she had the old Nintendo then the GameCube would be a good gaming system. There are already a whole bunch of games for the GameCube and most are going down in price since the new Wii is out.Up to four people can play but I've found out that a lot of adults have trouble understanding how to save a game and what is needed to save a game.Basically, on the Wii and GameCube you have an infinite amount of slots.Slots are pretty much used for every game and doesn't really affect anything.Memory blocks go together with Slots. You get a certain amount of memory blocks in a memory card that you can buy at most game stores or retailers. On the back of each game it says how much blocks will be used to save and every game uses one of those infinite amount of slots. This amount is subtracted (when you save) from your total that you have on your memory card.It gets simple once you experience it rather than reading.Controllers for the GameCube cost about $10 (cheapest) to $20 (highest price).Games range from $5 to $35.The system it self costs about ...I think $70 now if I remember correctly but not much higher. This is a good deal since the Play Stations are in the hundreds or $500s-$600s while the Xbox 360s are just a hundred dollars lower (oldest one). You could buy the Wii which already has a good portion of internal memory and the same infinite amount of slots so you don't really have a hassle. It will take a long time until you use up all the memory on the games. The Wii is $250 and games cost $30 (oldest which isn't a lot of games) to $50.This sounds pretty steep but then again not compared to other systems (you also get a game included titled Wii Sports). You get to really interact with the games since the system uses wireless controllers and takes full advantage of its capabilities in sometimes wacky ways. The main controller costs $40 while the other controllers that give you more ways to play but aren't used in all games are $20 (there's only 2 of these $20 controlles and one is for virtual console while the other is used with the main cotroller). If you have a wireless router you can even connect the Wii to the internet and shop for old games on the virtual console. These games are from the two old Nintendo systems, the Sega, the Nintendo 64,and some thing called TurboGrfX.Those range from $5 to $10 depending on which game you want to buy.The Wii is also backwards compatible which means you can use the memory cards, controllers, and games of the GameCube on the Wii.The Wii is isn't scarce but where I live they're not at every store every day and you may have to put it on rain check or for someone at a game store to reserve it for you.You might want to buy the Wii only if you have enough money but a few three to five games could last for a while since using the controll as a steering wheel in a racing game, sword in a fighting game, and a bat in baseball game is kind of fun and intuitive.GameCubes seem to be vanishing from stores but there are still a few left in most stores.Sorry my answer is long but I hope it will help you decide.By the way I had a GameCube but I sold it and some games to buy a Wii for me and my two 6 year old sisters and they play more than I do!

I would say either Nintendo Wii or Nintendo DS. The Wii has many Mario games and backward copatible GameCube games, so you could get her Mario Kart Double Dash or Paper Mario and many other fun Mario games. The DS is a two screen system that has a touch screen. The games for kids are endless! With Nintendogs you could buy puppy dogs and raise them, Mario Kart is the new school version of the old one(same gameplay and improved graphics) there is Pokemon a good game for all ages, the Super Mario Bros that brings back 2-D gameplay and is good! And Yoshi's Island where you play as the lovable green dinosaur in Mario. Those systems would be very kid-oriented and have many games for younger kids. A GameCube would be recommended if you want to save the cheddar, it would cost less but you can play Gamecube games only.

Like the others have already said, it's best to stick with Nintendo for that age range. They have the most kid friendly games.
Xbox and Playstation will be great for when she gets older (if she's still into video games then), but you'll find a lot of "M" rated games on those systems too.

The best system to get for a 9 year old would probably be a Nintendo Wii. The only thing is that it is hard to find at stores.

If you can find a Wii get that.
The Wii is great because of the motion controls and you have nice multiplayer games like Wii Sports (tennis, baseball, bowling, golf, and boxing), WarioWare (lots of zany minigames, did I just say zany lol), and Smash Bros (4 player party fighter) is coming out in the next few months.
When she gets older (or better) at games maybe she can try and tackle Zelda.
If not, Gamecube or DS (but then you'll need 2).

PS2/Xbox These 2 options are $100-$150 which is affordable compared to other options, yet they are just as enjoyable as the new up to date systems.
