Ive got a fire that looks like a real coal fire with an open flue. However when it is windy dirt comes down; and when its cold it creates a draft. How can I block this up yet remove the block when I want to use the fire; without the use of paper.
I would prefer something that looks ok and not a fire hazard. I understand that if this was left blocked if I lit the fire it would more than likely become a health hazzard but it will be removed.

Purchase a chiney balloon. The chimney balloon is made in a special laminate of three plastics to make it airtight, tear-resistant and long-lasting. It also has a special shape that allows a little ventilation on two corners to keep your chimney dry. Using a chimney balloon is completely safe: if it is accidentally heated, it shrivels and deflates.

Capping the chimney will stop wind but any heat in the firebox will cause a draft up the chimney and will dislodge soot and dust. This will eventually settle on your burner and can cause carbon monoxide problems.Have your chimney cleaned (swept) by a pro before you consider a temporary or permanent cap. There should also be a flue damper directly above the firebox that should be closed after cleaning. Keeping this closed may solve the problem without a cap.

You can get a bag especially for this purpose. Beware of it causing a damp chimney though, as there needs to be some through draft. I had this advice from the chimney sweep the last time I had my chimney swept. Best to just use it sometimes, maybe when it's particularly windy or cold.

Update.
Thanks mdf routing for the added info re chimney balloon. I called it a bag! I didn't realize it had ventilation built in. Makes it all the more useful.

Real fireplace. Not even close. Electric may look like a fire but it does not feel like one. If you actually could use your fireplace for heat, than a wood stove or at least a fireplace insert is a good option. If your house isn't too old than your chimney may need just the occasional cleaning to keep it in good working order.

We have the same problem, if you haven't already got one then you need to put a special kind of cap over the chimney pot - can't remember what they're called though. Make sure it meets the relevant regulations for your fire though.

I would advise you to get the chimney swept, I would not advise you to put anything up the chimney That would be dangerous, & someone could use the fire when you are out not knowing you had blocked it & DIE!!!!
