It depends on the type of fish. Let us know what species you have. Sometimes it's very easy to tell the male from the female. Usually males are more colorful and have longer pointed fins though in some species it's near impossible to tell.

What sort of Cichlids? There are thousands of them world-wide and the answer would be different for each species.

Usually the males are more colorful but in some fish the female is the larger fish.
( gotta tell you a funny story)
We were visiting Louisiana where they serve some pretty exotic foods for us Georgia people--Jambalya, Boudin, Creole Chicken, etc.
We learned early to ask them to explain the dish before we ate it. So one night we were at some people's house and the lady of the home said, "Tonight we are having fish balls for dinner."
My mom looked shocked and asked "Fish have balls?"

I agree with PeeTee here, it's helpful and as a general rule of thumb, which I hate to put my neck out on, the males are usually more colorful, but at the same time, knowing what species you have is going to be what we need to give you an on target accurate answer.

It depends upon the kind of fish you have. Mostly, the male fish are more "decorative" and pretty while the females are more plain.

Usually on males there is a rod-like appendage sticking out of their bottoms. You need to look closeyl. The females don't have it.
