You need a MSN or hotmail account to use live messenger. Downloading the software should be practically harmless to your computer. If you are worried about the software slowing down your computer: do the following

after installing the software:
go to start
click run
type: MSCONFIG
press enter
click the start up tab
uncheck the boxes that say yahoo messenger or windows live messenger.

Becareful about what you uncheck. but to comfort you this won't remove the programs from your computer it will just prevent them from automatically starting when you start windows > faster startup = happier parents ;)

When and if you actually do need to use the program find it in the programs list.

Also while installing... do a custom install and be sure to uncheck any boxes that may offer you to install things you don't need such as toolbars, search assistants. etc. these things will slow your computer down as well.

I wouldn't touch Windows Live Messenger with a bargepole. Its still full of bugs.

If you are both on Yahoo, then stay on it!! If you want a totally safer way of talking to people on MSN, Yahoo, AOL etc, then get Trillian. A much better instant messaging service and far far more secure.
