Haven't been for a few years but we are going back in September. You'll love it the climate is great usually hot with a nice breeze, beaches are fantastic. Can't believe people are putting you off because of Maddie, lets face it this sort of thing is very rare and can happen anywhere in the world - Did tourists stop coming to England because of Jamie Bulger? Carvoeiro is a nice little harbour, there are some good water parks and I think there is a marine show now.

Have a great time - sorry couldn't be more helpful with places to go.

Just come back after travelling 8 months in a motor home, you can't go wrong in the Algarve, people are friendly and food is all great and very cheap! If you have transport travel about a bit, if not look for the restaurants with plenty of people in and its a safe bet the price and food will be good.

Hi,
I live in the Algarve and have been to Portimão- it has an amazing beach. I haven't eaten there but there are lots of places to choose from. As a general rule try to see where the locals go and don't be put off if seaside restaurants look a bit like a shack they're sometimes the best! Check out http://www.portugal-sport-and-adventure.com for ideas of interesting days out
Have a great holiday!

Yeah, been there lots as its only a 2 hr drive from home. Great coast of little coves and beaches. Usually we head for Albufeira as it has lots of options but we head for the old part not the new bit. Some fantastic restaurants in Guia (recommended Atlantico) a little inland and a bit back towards Faro from Portimao. If you have a car try the market day at Loulé or head up into the hills/mountain region a little way inland. Recommended dish to try at a coastal restaurant is the cataplana which comes in various guises but my favourite is the pork and clams.

Portugal is fantastic. Do not be put off by what happened to Maddy that could happen anywhere and especially in UK. There is a fantastic restaurant called The Titanic in Praia Da Rocha very near to there. You don't get that smell that there is in Spain as it is on the Atlantic so everything is much fresher. Take a light jacket at night as it can get cool but after the heat during the day that can be very refreshing. Iwould have loved to go this year but the flights got too dear after Xmas.

I have been there, I was born there, I am from there although I live in England now. I can tell you this:
There are many beautiful and exciting countries to visit in Europe but you will not find another country like Portugal and you will have lots of people telling you precisely that. What I can add is this : Try the following:
Seafood like you will not find anywhere else in Europe.
If you pass by the Capital Lisbon, ask where it is and go there to a seafood restaurant called SOL-MAR -- it is considered by many to be the BEST seafood restaurant in Europe.

And:
PASTEIS DE NATA and PASTEIS DE BACALHAU.
Do a search under those two names and learn what they are.

I went to the Algrave a few year back now and it was really nice. We found the best places to eat was in the old town if you wanted a quite nite but if you want loads of noise, clubs, pubs and bars you'll be better for going to the strip which was rammed with clubs and bars you don't know where 2 go first! Hope thats a help!!!
