.....Courage is the willingness to act in a risky situation, even though you feel fear.
It's a behavior pattern. To develop this pattern, you have to perform acts of courage repeatedly over time. It's like physical exercise, developing a certain part of your body.
Physical courage. Moral courage - standing up for what you believe in. Boldness - doing things that haven't been done before. Financial risks, relationship risks...there are lots of ways to be courageous. Life is full of risks...you can't avoid them. Being alive and achieving your goals will always mean taking chances.
Start small. Small risks. Assess the potential benefits, rewards, risks and costs. If it's worth it to you, then go ahead. Each small act of courage will help you develop courage as a behavior pattern. As you feel comfortable, you can take on bigger risks.
But don't be foolhardy. Don't take unnecessary risks. That's not what courage is about.

“Courage is a moral quality; it is not a chance gift of nature like an aptitude for games. It is a cold choice between two alternatives, the fixed resolve not to quit; an act of renunciation which must be made not once but many times by the power of the will. Courage is will power”. (Lord Moran).
Moral courage is the bravery to stand up for and live with a system of personal values, which are tested everyday. It is a consistent courage that is not tested through a single act of self sacrifice or intense action; instead a steady resolve that we draw upon in our relationships with others around us. This is the courage of the peace activist, the nurse, the cancer patient, the refugee, the unemployed, the average human being who goes to work everyday to feed his family and earn a living.
In a world where the pursuit of values is on the rise again the ability to take a stand and let life throw whatever it can at us and move forward without giving up.
To consistently and unassumingly take the good and the bad on a daily basis and still maintain values, character and a sense of humor is indeed the reality of moral courage.
“There are men for whom it is nothing to go and die in battle. They are supported by something else , by religion or a cause. I think they are wrongly attributed with courage. I think courage is what fills the gap between what you would prefer to do and what you have to do. To measure courage, measure the stress that people have to undergo to do what they do and still keep a cheerful face and achieve their aims. Courage is coping with stress.” (Captain Ian Gardiner, 45 Commando Royal Marines quoted in “Above All Courage” by Max Arthur).
I really agree with Captain Gardiner, so many of us get through life facing daily stresses and showing incredible courage, but do not congratulate ourselves for our achievement.

We are more than animals and the flight-or-fight instinct can be overcome at a cost. Jesus taught us to turn the other cheek and that isn't some impossible ideal; we are all capable of showing that much courage and emptying the world of its anger and hatred.

If you are a Hindu, you can recite Desika's 'Sudharsanashtakam' daily and you will definitely see a change in your nature. [of course, it is redundant to say that you must start it with faith in your heart and conviction that you are going to do it-- this mantra is meant for the purpose of erasing fear ]

"Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee."
OR
"Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest. "
"Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the LORD."
AND,FINALLY.........
".......he thanked God, and took courage!"
