On Christmas Eve 1776. Washington crossed the delawar river (in New Jersey) to launch a surprise attack on the Hessian soldiers (German soldiers hired by the British to fight against the patriots). Washington was successful and this was a major victory for us in the Revolutionary war.

Just north of Trenton, NJ, about 15 minutes from my house. Great little historical park, and they re-enact the crossing every Christmas.

Its really only famous because of the outstanding painting made in show in the Met in New York. The battle was an easy victory and the painting is way over-appreciated as the event was really not that big in history.
