I have quit a few times and have stayed quit for years...only to drink party and re-gain my faith in the tobacco industry.
OK the biggest piece for me was the first 5 days are by far the toughest, once you get through those your home free.
I always chose to switch up my addictions....because that is what I know how to do best,,,,so I began walking ALLOT....got myself up to at least 5 miles a day.
Made healthier eating choices(just to feel better about myself)and I never planned on it but I stopped drinking at the time,so as not to pick up a cigarette and for me that is key....if I have a drink I could care less about my health or my trying to do something good for myself,so for me its like asking for it.(anything good to back fire)
I know you can do it and remember its one day at a time, and if you have to go to bed early to get through these initial tough days... then do so.
Cold turkey is the only way..as I am sure you know....because there is no such thing as 3 a day and I just love the people that say they only smoke 3 a day....HORSE PUCKY!!
Good luck dear Lady,,,as I know you can do this.

The hardest ones to get over are the morning and after meal cigarettes. The best advice I have for those are as soon as your are done eating brush your teeth and try not to think about the craving and chew a lot of gum if possible. I am going to tell you the morning and after meal cigarette cravings done really go away, they do ease up but I have not smoked in 10 years and I still have those craving every now and then. Exercise, because once you quit you will be finding other things to do with your hands, snacking is bad! Good luck!

I quit a 5 pack a day habit, after somewhere around 20 tries. and after smoking 55 + years, only 26 months ago
5 trips to the hosp with shortness of breath is scarey
Maybe if you can quit soon enough, so you won't need oxygen and $200 a month in medications, maybe you can continue to travel and have a good sex life( some folks can't breath well enough)

I teach a smoking cessation class for a VA hospital. The addiction to tobacco has three parts......chemical, psychological and behavioral. If you aren't using an aid such as welbutrin, which lowers cravings.....see your doctor ASAP. Secondly keep something in your mouth to stimulate the pacification reflex that a cigarette does. (why do you think they're shaped that way?) Doesn't matter what it is now that you know about it.....gum, candy, mints, toothpick...whatever.
Thirdly become extraordinarily busy for a while to focus your mind off of triggers and self pity. Start a new hobby, clean the garage, do ALL of your laundry...etc.....Within 2 weeks you'll be feeling great and on your way to better health...Good Luck!

Okay. Smoking makes your breath stink and it makes your hair smell like your dirtiest ashtray. By the way, throw all your ashtrays away (yes, even that one so-in-so bought you on her trip) and do NOT let anyone else smoke in your house. Tell them you Had to quit because you are allergic to smoke. And never boast about quitting beause it is a jinx. Blame it on allergies. Now you can't get better advice than that!!

You go, gal. One of the toughest things in the world to do. Just think of what you're doing to help yourself live longer, healthier and have more good years with the ones you love and your passion in life. Think of what you can do with that extra cash. Think of how you're screwing the government out of taxes :)
Keep going at it, and now if you get growlly at us, we'll know where it's coming from. Now we can just call you b***** and laugh about it (just kidding!).
Fight on, you can do it.
Peace
Peace, and keep on fighting the good fight.

Chewing gum really helps. It doesn't have to be the nicotine gum. I chew gum when I am at work and can't smoke. It does help the cravings.
