The above answers are great. When thanking someone for money, the proper way is to thank them for their generosity (do not mention the amount) and then add a line about what your plans are for the money. i.e.

Thank you for your generous gift. It will really come in handy when buying books for college.

Something like that.

In general the thank you should reference the gift you received... They don't have to be long or anything, and remember no matter how silly they might seem, the person getting it will forget what you wrote in a few weeks time but will remember that you took an effort to say thanks forever.

Never underestimate the memory of someone that feels snubbed by not getting a thank you card. I've heard of people cutting nieces or nephews from a will or such things as silly as it sounds. And you will never know which person sending a gift will get their panties in a wad over it.

Something short and simple is fine! If they came to your graduation or open house, you could say thank you for coming to my open house (or graduation) and being part of my special day! Your gift of ____was greatly appreciated. If it is someone out of town or someone who couldn't attend you can say thank you for thinking of me and then thank them for the gift. If you want, you can add in something about your plans for the summer or for college. If you received money you can say what you are using the money for.

In reference to the answer above about not putting the amount...that may be true but I when I get a thank you card, I like to see that they know what I got them.

Thank you for the __________. I really appreciate your remembering my graduation. It is a big step for me and I really wanted you to be a part of it. Thank you again for your generosity.
