You'd be suprised how similar the tool box in a physics lab looks to that in your neighborhood auto mechanic's garage. More specific to the lab, though, the oscilloscope is a very common one. It measures voltage as a function of time on an electronic graph. It's essential for any electronics work to test circuits. Some auto shops have those too.

What ever is needed to prove their point.
I used a heating pad, a beaker, a weight scale, a zip lock bag, a balloon, straw, string, etc.
If you know the physical meaning of what is going on in the phenomena, then you can customize the tools and use them.
