My house backs on to quite a busy road, I need ideas to cut out noise and make fensing more attractive, I have some shrubs and trees. I need this to be done in shortest time possible.

conifers are the best - you can buy them quite large now, plant them around 4 ft apart and they will soon nit into a pretty good sound barrier *( they do gro tall though, so beware!)

Timber fencing will have little effect on noise reduction, A 6ft brick or block wall may help a bit, triple glazing in windows would improve conditions indoors, No solution would be cheap I'm sorry to say, Could be why previous tenants moved.

A Yew hedge is good for noise - it is easier maintenance than leylandii and forms a denser barrier although it is a bit slower growing.

The leylandii could be your friend. It needs serious work though, to keep them under control. You have to commit to several trims a year.
But they will help.
