my mother in law always told me to start at 3 months but i listened to my DR. and waited until 4-6 months. below i added what i have found from babycenter.com
Question: We have an 8-week-old daughter who polishes off a 4-ounce bottle of formula every one to two hours. She seems continually hungry. When do we start her on something other than formula, such as cereal? She weighs 12 pounds.
Answer: Starting cereal this early in her life isn't a good idea. Despite her weight and the amount she is consuming, her gastrointestinal tract is still immature, and introducing another foreign protein in cereal can predispose her to allergies later on.

Some premature infants require baby cereal to thicken their breastmilk/formula for aspiration (breathing in the feeding) or for reflux (to help the milk stay down in stomach to be digested.)
Some research has shown that infants that are exposed to cereal before 4 months have increased risk for diabetes later in life. Also introducing foods before 4-6 months can increase the incidence of food allergies in some babies.
I would not give rice cereal to your baby before it is recommended by the pediatrician. Most say 4 months starting w/ rice cereal then moving through fruits and vegetables one at a time w/ intervals between to be able to tell if there is a food allergy.
Giving the baby rice cereal will not help him/her sleep longer through the night, if that is your hopes.

I would talk to your dr to make sure that your baby is ready for the baby cereal before you give it to your baby. My daughters pediatrician put her on baby cereal about a week before she turned 6 months old. I would not give it before 4 months though, usually the sooner you start to give a baby solid foods the greater the chance that the baby will develop food allergies.

All of the people that wait until there babies are 6 months old must have very good children. Because when you have a one month old baby that takes 4 to 6 oz of formula every 1 to 2 hours (and that is pushing it) you will do anything to satisfy him.

Are tummy aches considered safe?
The 6months is the guideline because it takes that long by average for the digestive system to develop.
Why the rush? Breastmilk (or formula) has the all the nutrients tuned to a baby younger than 6 months.

I would discuss it with your pediatrician. I know that babies, especially with reflux, are often given some cereal in their bottle with formula or breastmilk. There have been studies linking starting cereal before 4 months with diabetis (although I personally don't put much stock in them). At that age, you can always give it a try.

Babies little digestive systems just are not ready for anything other than milk before 4 months. I know there will be people telling you different because people used to do it all the time but people used to do all kinds of stupid things before.
