I mix water, vinegar, and alcohol with a few drops of Dawn dishsoap. Sometimes I leave out the vinegar but it cuts grease and smoke film on car windows either way and doesn't streak.
An actual recipe for it is:
1 Gallon distilled water
1 Pint 70% Alcohol
1/4 cup White Vinegar
1 teaspoon dishwashing liquid
Mix and put in a spray bottle. You can cut this recipe in half also. Store the extra in a sealed bottle (like a water jug) to use later.

There's a lot of glass cleaners out there, but really, no one is better than another. If it's the smell that's getting to you, there's a line of cleaning products at Whole Foods Market that is safe for the environment and smells great. It's called Mrs. Meyers. It's expensive, but if you can afford it, it smells amazing.
If you want your windows to be super clean regardless of what glass cleaner you use, try using newspaper instead of paper towels. I know it sounds crazy, but it works! I learned about it from working in retail... the store always had torn up newspapers around to clean the windows. It really does make your windows look so clean that you don't even know they're there (watch out with sliding doors!)

I use a small amount of dishwasher liquid soap (1 or 2 tsps) in a bucket of water, a dry towel, and a squeegie.

I use a big sponge soaked in the solutionto swish the window . Then I use a dry towel to wipe a border around the top and sides of the window. Then squeegie the window. (The squeegie works perfectly if it has a bit of dry window to "grab". Wipe the squeegie blade dry between swipes, too.)

You can do a lot of windows in a short amount of time with this method. That's how pros clean windows - it's fast and effective.

As others have mentioned, vinegar and water is great! I use 50% vinegar. Dry with newspaper. Here's a good tip: use vertical strokes when washing outside and horizontal for inside, so you can easily tell which side has any streaks. Avoid washing windows when it's very sunny, as they will dry too quickly and tend to leave streaks.

When I was younger and worked in hotels we used either vinegar and water or rubbing alcohol and water. Equal parts of each in a spray bottle....I personally preferred the rubbing alcohol and water but some of the other girls I worked with preferred the vinegar and water.

I use white vinegar, no water and an old news paper. I will crumple the paper up until it is real soft and there will be no streaks. If I have no newspaper I use toilet paper, no streaks.
