In California there are some smaller ranges west of the Sierra Nevada.
The Santa Monica Mountains are right up against the Pacific Ocean from Point Hueneme (pronounced Why-Nee-Mee) to Malibu, then turn inland and bisect the city of Los Angeles. The famous Hollywood sign is on the tail end.
The San Gabriel Range is Higher and runs parallel to the Santa Monica mountains and separates the Los Angeles Basin, and San Gabriel Valley from the Mojave Desert.
