Carolus is the Latin name which is usually translated into English as 'Charles' or 'Carl'. Sometimes the feminine form, Caroline, is used as a woman's name and sometimes Caroline is an adjective form of the Latin male version of the name.
Since there were several European kings and other nobility named Charles, Carolus, Caroline, etc during the Age of Discovery, there are locations all over the world that have some variation of the name Caroline. For instance, the Caroline Islands, the American states of North and South Carolina, etc. Also, in English, the 'Caroline' period usually refers to the events during the lifetime of King Charles I in the early 1600s.
