If you,re in the UK - yes. It's called defacing the monarch and is a very old law as yet unrepealed. Dont know what the penalty is - probably hanging or a public flogging!

Not illegal to draw or write on face of the note. But if u intentionally defacing the note by scribbling on the serial no. or trying to cover the signature or anything which disapprove its originality then its illegal.

I have been told in the past that it was, the person told me it could be perceived to be an act of treason. I can't say that I believed them though. When I am at work We regularly bundle a batch of say £500 in 20's with an elastic band and write the amount on them. If it is illegal how can they possible enforce the law?

It can't be as I've received plenty of bank notes with writing on. It's not like the authorities are going to find out who doodled on them as they circulate so fast.

If it is, then most bank clerks, tellers would be in the clink. They write (on the top note) the ammount of money in each bundle of money, i.e. £500 etc, etc. :-)
