Are the republicans in Congress against the immigration bill because it will force employers to pay the illegals a legal wage or are they against it because it only has a few more teeth then the worthless immigration bill that Reagan forced onto the country?

I can't put my finger on it.

It was the republicans saving the chimp's face value. but most right now are distancing themselves from the Bush camp. As for immigration, the congress sees that we need something out there that is different than what we currently have. It is like we have 20 million illegals out there, and we know they are out there but they are hired very quietly by businesses everywhere with a real desire to hold down wages and that's the bottom line. Of course this bill grants full amnesty to those that are already here (I think it will cost the illegals $ to live and stay here). Also the illegals are paid very low wages under the table and no taxes are ever collected. It's "wiping the slate clean" and then starting over. This bill is bad for every other legal citizen in America. It helps business because they can continue to hire and employ illegals with little or no fear they will get caught. When Swift and company in 6 midwestern states were caught with 1300 illegals, DHS and the FBI shut them down and they were fined $130,000,000 for this scheme. Who PAID the fine??? We did because the price of packaged meats went through the roof and to this day they are still high. Swift sold its company to another big business buyer. Bad bills do not solve the problem with illegals. They must close the borders and deport any illegals they find and fine the big businesses who hire the illegals instead of legal citizens that want to work!!!

Perhaps the republicans in congress are listening to the people. The majority of people in both parties don't want Amensty.
However that would throw the theory out that Bush want this law to pass because of Big Business to give them cheap labor.

The republicans in Congress are starting to listen to the majority of American people who do not want amnesty for illegals.

HECK no! BTW many Dems did not like it either. It grants amnesty, does not close our borders and lets 20 million people run unchecked. It does not protect our society. It grants immunity and amnesty for violent crimes that have been commited. All we need to do is enforct the laws we have but they are so hoping that illegals will get voting rights and they do not want to alienate themselves from them.

First off, why are you blaming the Republicans!? President Bush WANTS this bill passed now!! It is not the republicans that are trying to stop this bill, it is the Democrats because they want to add things on that would make things worse in this country not better. Please do more research on this bill and find the real truth!

The hold outs realize that they'll be voted out of office. So in answer to your question, I don't think that either apply. I think that there are still some left in office who will support their constituents, something not easy to come by in this day and age.

they're against it because it's a dumb idea and would be bad for the country and because it's extremely unpopular, with about 75-80% of the nation against it.

Have you read the bill? If so where can I see a copy of it?

Both, plus they're reacting to the calls and emails of their constituents.
