History simply allows us the ability to identify with the present. When we view history, it is like looking into a mirror day after day after day; we get to study those changes as they relate to us. To define our identity is to simply know why we are who we are.

A broader vision of the world, increase social awareness and understandings of differences. It also help to accept others beliefs and cultures. If you don't open yourself to the world, the world will never come to you, and tell you how life can be better for you...
Also, since someday everybody need to work to make a living, knowing how the world works will help you increase your chance of promotions, as you will understand the mechanisms that can help you to do so... Not knowing it, will make it difficult for you to acheive very high objectives in your life! So the greater are your dreams, the more you need to know about the world. Also, your survival depends on it. If animals would never learn that they are predators hunting them to eat, then they would have no chance to survived such encounter. Its the same with everything in life, you must learn your world and how it works to avoid things, while getting the good things to promote your life and the life of your childs later in life.

You are in HS right?
Imagine, you just moved one day before school started your junior year of HS.
You are in a different school, a different state.
You know nothing about where you are, who your school's rivals are, where any of the classes are, where the office is, where your locker is.
You have no map, no friends, and nowhere to ask.
You could look for everything, but if you had that map, wouldn't it be easier?

That is what most people are like when they get out of HS/college. They don't know what the world is like, because they haven't been there. If they made an attempt to learn about the world around them, though, at least they have a map. They know who they can trust, and who they can all on.
If you go through HS and only care about who your newest bf is, then you get out, and are expected to know everything, and you don't.

Hope this made it clear.

The world is always changing. Events take place every second of every day that effect the outcome of the events the following day, week, month, hour, second etc. By learning about our world we can better understand why things happen and how to prevent or provoke them in the future. Some things we would prefer not happen ever again, like catastrophic events such as war, earthquakes, typhoons and other natural disasters, terrorist attacks, poor decisions that may cause some thing that wouldn't have happened otherwise...and there are some events that you want to occur again and again, space flight, new inventions, communications etc...how else can we get them to happen again if we don't understand why they happened the first time? I guess in summary we want to learn form the world around us to help us make things better for our futures.

As Francis Bacon said "Nam et ipsa scienta protestas est" - Knowledge itself is power (or something like that)
If you are going to interact with the world then you need to know about it. It does depend on how deep or how far you want to go. Many people never leave their countries in their entire lives, so knowledge of the wider world may not seem so relevent. I was rubbish at French at school and the excuse I gave my Dad was that I'd probably never go there. He was not impressed. Iv'e bthere several times now and have been embarrassed at my crappy language skills. I'm living in Uganda at the moment (I'm British) and never thought in a million years I'd ever be working here. Knowing about the world prepares you for whatever may come. I know enough not to take jobs in certain countries e.g I'd hate to turn up in Iran in my shorts....

It is important to know anything? One could and I am sure many do live a life of total ignorance.
Many have to touch the hot stove to know it is hot rather than listening to elders advice that the stove is hot.
It is the same thing but on a larger scale. What transpires in the world may effect your life and what has already happened may happen again. We only have our one life to live, and our understanding of everthing we do is from that short time.

If we know more about the world around us, we'll be more understanding towards different people. For example if you never met a African American in your life you'd be scared or wondering how they are and stuff. But if you knew a bit of background history you'd be more understanding. Let's say you have to go to another country for a business trip or a visit, you should know how people are there and what beliefs they have, so no big surprises come along.

because we can understand better and because by knowing we became richer in knowledge. If we all were to learn don't you think there were less war and pain around the world. Everybody should learn about history and science, instead of wanting other race to die, or to kill people.

There is a quote that goes "Those who don't know history are doomed to repeat it." It's good to know your past and how your country came about so you can understand the things we represent and the things that we do. It's also important so you can learn from the mistakes that your past citzens have made.

The more informed we are the more we understand about other cultures. Ignorance breeds discrimination. If you understand about the cultures/religion/world views of others you will become more accepting of others.
