He is a very awesome player. But three things stop him from being mentioned among the other top 5.
1. Post season success. He has not won in it. (James, Duncan, Kobe, Nash, and the others to be mentioned here have fairly deep)
2. He shares a court with Yao (who in my opinion is very talented but overrated). Which while he isn't demanding all attention he takes most of it because he is so unique (Yahoo-Nba has a video right there talking about Yi and has contrasted against Yao). This makes it harder for T-Mac to command such a title.
3. Kind of a play on the last two, but his perona. He isn't something new, or too different from the rest. While he may be a better player people get into a mindset about players and it becomes hard to drop them. He just doesn't come to mind for all the above reasons and as such he usually drops on lists that rate the top players.

McGrady is a very good player with great stats especially last season where he could have won the MVP. He is a bit underrated because he's no longer putting up 30 pts per game. The media put all the hype on scorers and extreme performers in assists like Nash and Kidd.

The guy that listed 5 players that he believed has better stats than TMac last year is an example of people who cannot see the greatness in TMac's numbers.

Hey, TMac is a very good defender. He uses those long arms well. 1.4 stls/game and 1 blk/game so far in his career.

He's underated because he can't get his team past the first round of the playoffs; and unfortunately that is used against him in determininng his greatness. He's a victim of circumstance and with the talent overload that is the Western conference some stars are simply bound to feel the icy cold spotlight that comes with not making it past the first round despite being an all star.

He consistently makes the all star team; but yet he lives in Yao's shadow...(and we all know that Yao proved to be a seriously overated China experiment). I think McGrady(as well as other "great weather" players) need to go to Eastern Conference teams (Chicago, NY, Atlanta) and he needs to get away from Yao because Yao gets all the love and McGrady damn near breaks his back every night to carry the Rockets.

So the problem is that the West is simply oversaturated with amazing talent; but no all star wants to give up the quality of life that comes with living out West. Great weather, better quality of living, beautiful women (not to say there aren't beautiful women on the East Coast) are all factors in why the West coast stars ain't going no where.

But with that attitude, you won't win a championship; you'll just have a mediocre to great career.

Like Kevin Garnett, for so many years now his team has had very high expectations and contiually fails to meet those goals. By that I mean they keep losing in the first round of the playoffs.

Unlike Kevin Garnett, he is in a good city at a good franchise, with a good G.M. so he doesn't have the excuses that Garnett does. The truth is that he's not really better than Ray Allen. Yeah he fills out the stat sheet, but who cares cause he doesn't win.

Good numbers yes. But for some reason the other players around him don't seem to get any better playing with him. he is a great player who is missing something. I can't put my finger on it, but he is very close to being really great but until he can get everybody around him to raise their game he will never get the respect he desrves unless he hogs the ball ans scores 50 a night every game like some players. No names mentioned.

Because he has yet to win a playoff series, in all of his years of playing in the NBA.
