my ex and i had a baby 19 months ago but he has been absent throughout my experience. i'd love to meet his mother as he told me she was not alive when we met only later to find out that, that was not the truth and she is alive and well. i'd love for her to know she has a granddaughter and would love to meet her. all i know is the family surname and that she lives in the states. i know which state. but i haven't a clue where to start. or how to approach her if i was successful. as my ex and i finished on ugly terms. and i live in the uk.

There are many sites that you can use, most of them you have to pay. What you could do since you know the surname and the the state is if somehow you could obtain a phone book for that state. Also you could call directory assistance and try there. You may want to consider she already knows about the child and he has given his side of the story, so she may not be happy to hear from you.
