Old dired out paint is best resprayed. If you attempt to polish and wax it out you will only make the car painters job harder. Several different paints out there metalic paint uasally is a three step process primer color and clear. Sounds like your clear paint is cracking and dull look closely. If the painter knows some way to paint over cracking dry paint don't do it. You must sand down to the metal and build the paint layers back up.

Red auto paint is made from rose petals and is the most prone to fading---a good detail shop can probably buff it out pretty well with compounds and polishes depending on how old the car is. Have them try a section first--- see if looks better and if it's worth doing the whole car---otherwise a paint job is in order.

a couple of things to think about. has the car been clearcoated?most have, unless it is 15 yrs old or older. buffing the clearcoat will not brighten up the paint below it. secondly, has the paint been sealed with an unknown wax or sealer? you probably will not no. either way,it is a big job and you may end up burning the paint off.leave it alone,or face a paint job.
