i heard it was smell, could be hearing too though.

Smell and taste are pretty much tied together and they are incredible. You can taste something after decades and be 6 yrs old again. Sight is very strong in 'flashbulb memories'. The ones with strong emotions and impact tied in. Most people can picture EXACTLY where they were when 9/11 happened, what they were wearing and the whole visual display laid out for them.
