You are right, a baby that small can not handle food yet. A baby's digestive tract is not mature, and has micorscopic holes in it where the food can get into the blood stream, causing the body to attack it. This is waht causes allergies.
A good general rule of thumb is not to go by age alone, but development as well. A baby is ready to start solids when:
1. she has doubled her birth weight
2. she can sit well with support
3. she can move the food to the back of the mouth with her tongue
4. she shows interest in other foods, like what you are eating
5. she is drinking 2 oz for every pound she weights in a 24hr period, and is still hungry.
These are just guidelines because every baby is different. But as with turning her to face front in the car, there are guideline to follow to show she is ready. Most babies achieve these things between 4 and 6 months.
Olease advise your friend and her sister in law that even tough she may eat it, her bady may not be handeling it as well as she thinks. Her baby will not get fat from formula, and it has all the nutrients she needs at this age. It will cause no harm to wait a month or so when her body is ready.

Three months is too young, the baby's digestive system is not mature enough to cope with food yet. Even though jars say suitable from 4 months most doctors will recommend that babies do not start on food before 6 months. At 3 months old a babies kidneys cannot handle food, and it can cause her health problems. I would be very surprised if a midwife recommended that your friend give her baby jars so early, at that age babies should be having milk and nothing else.

at 3 months old the baby cannot handle foods - and unless there is a medical reason for putting the baby on foods early - (which usually can only be decided by a paed) - she really shouldnt be doing that!!!
A midwife should not be saying follow on milk will make a baby fat - as this too is not the case, if the baby needs extra formula then so be it - feeding this early is putting the baby at risk!!!
Please advise your friend to get a second opinion from a gp!!!

that is mad a 3 month old should not be having solid foods at all its way to early.
In all honesty I don't even see the purpose to follow on milks either. I used SMA gold all the way untill my daughter was 1, she started solids at around 5 months and so long as they are eating solids a follow on milk isn't really necessary as they will be getting the extra stuff their bodies need from solids which is what you should be trying to gradually train your babies body to do at around 6months when solids are introduced. Then when they reach a year they should be established on 3 decent solid meals a day and can then drink cows milk.

Doctors will tell you no, my dad told me to listen to my gut and I did. You only start a baby off with baby cereal, only if he is hungry and the baby's mother is comfortable doing that. Fruits and veggies or whatever is in that jar is not good for them at that age and can be painful for their digestive system. There is no need to worry about a baby getting fat, that extra fat is stored energy and vitamins and is a benefit in case the baby is ill.

Babies under four months can not handle food as their digestive tracts are not fully developed. I can't believe that a midwife would recommend that either sorry!! Tell your friend to see her health visitor and see what they say or else her GP.

formula comes first no matter what and it tells you on baby jars from 4 months but any good health visitor will say wait till at least 5 months or you end up with lots of allergies.

No they need formula or breast milk for the first year of their lives then they are able to digest cows milk, babies only usually are given foods to sample at around 4mths, before that they cant handle digesting it.
Your friend or her midwife is an idiot. Doing that could seriously harm the baby.

she should not be feeding a 3 month old baby food and if her pediatrician were to find out about this i am sure he/she would not be happy. this baby should be on formula she is gonna end up screwing up her baby's digestive track by giving him/her baby food before the little body can digest it. not good!

my daughter is 3 months and 2 weeks, iv tried her on baby food and she loves it!, she tried baby rice and wasn't too keen so I tried her on some food, she still has her bottles( follow on formula) with one jar of baby food a day. Dr, midwives and H.Vs RECOMMEND that a child doesn't try foods until 4 months but every baby is different, my nephew was 6 weeks when he started on baby rice and follow on milk, hes now 4 no allergies no problems and hes not fat.
