Its a hard one, im thinking aretha franklin ive never heard anybody sing with a voice like hers
compared to all the newer singers these days thier voices are all edited
arethas voice was pure
anyway who do you think is the best female singer????

I don't know but Billie Holiday had a voice of an angel!!!
Just no comparing, her, Aretha, Ella Fitzgerald, Connie Francis,Doris Day,Vera Lynn, Peggy Lee, Rosemary Clooney, or even Ethel Merman, Judy Garland and Dinah Shore and then even Patsy Cline. They were simply impeccable.
In later times I'd say Janis Joplin, Annie Lennox, and you know what...I agree Amy Lee has a beautiful etheral voice, and some of those girls in the "Celtic Women" WoW!!!
OOps, forgot Kristy McColl ---sang many times with the Pogues, then she was tragically taken in a boat/drowning accident....she was an amazing woman and singer!
Gees, I thought I didn't really like female singers! haha

Wonderfully, there can be no greatest singer ever. It's like saying who is the best person ever. The really great singers all not only posses great voices but also are able to reach us right from the heart. A great singer can touch us with their humanity - whether they are interpreting someone else's words, or singing their own. Aretha is blessed with such a great gift it is very tempting to say she is the greatest. But then there's Billie Holiday...

Best female singer ever is always gonna be a matter of opinion and we all know everyone's got one.
I have to say that I agree with you on aretha franklin from the old skool R & B singers, however my modern day fave is not someone who registers high on most peoples faves. I like Lauryn Hill, My reason being that not only can she sing, and my god when she does sing its beautifull but she is equally talented on the rapping side of the game! I fine example being
""While You play Al Capone,
Ill be Nina Simone
& deficating on ya Microphone!""
I also agree that Mariah Carey can hit notes that i didnt belive were possible! (she is awesome but I tend to only like the remixes of her stuff the originals are generally terrible! But once again thats only my opinion!

I'm sorry but I have a soft spot for female-fronted bands!
I adore Shirley Manson and Gwen Stefani, but I do think that no other artiste has made music and sounds like Aretha Franklin!

I don't like her music, but i think Madonna has a extraordinary voice . So as Celine Dion. On my opinion there is no "one" best female singer ever:).
