The GOP has had it's debate about its presidential candidacy, so when do the republicans actually go out and vote, and how do they vote?

They, the Republican candidates, go through the same primary process as the Democrats do and they do it at the same time. When you go to the polls to fill out your primary ballot there are two different ballots. One lists all the Democrats while the other lists all the Republicans.

Voters registered to either party receive the ballot of their party's candidates.

I live in a state where those, like myself, who are not associated with any political party can choose which ballot they get.

Does that help or did I just make the confusion worse?

The Republican party will hold it's convention September 1 - 4, 2007. At that time the Delegates from all 50 states, who have attended will then nominate Presidental and Vice Presidental Canditate to represent the party in the presidental Election (the other parties will have Nominated their canditate at their own conventions) Which will take Place on November 4, 2008 which at that time the people will vote on the ballot (even if the names of the canditates are on the ballot) for an elector from the Electoral College

Its a bit confusing about the electorial process -

"The election of the President of the United States and the Vice President of the United States is indirect. Presidential electors are selected on a state by state basis as determined by the laws of each state. Currently each state uses the popular vote on Election Day to elect electors. Although ballots list the names of the presidential candidates, voters within the 50 states and the District of Columbia are actually choosing Electors from their state when they vote for President and Vice President. These Presidential Electors in turn cast the official (electoral) votes for those two offices. Although the nationwide popular vote is calculated by official and media organizations, it does not determine the winner of the election." (See last link)

There are many more debates coming.
The states have primary's next year (both Republican and Democrats), which determine the delegates for the party conventions (the voters from the individual party's vote for their candidate). The primary date in each state differs. (Start in January and go to July)
During the party conventions the nominees will be made official (the delegates will give their votes for the candidates at a roll call). This is late summer 2008.

The presidential primaries don't take place until next year.

It depends on which state you live in, but primaries range from the beginning of the year, all the way to the summer.

They don't vote for a leader. They are all locked into a deep cavern with no food, water, or lights. If one finds his way out he is the leader; they immediately lock the cave door again so none of the others can escape.
