There is a bed bug outbreak in our area. Unfortunatly we found some in our mattress. Do we need to buy a new mattress now, or can this be solved somehow?

There are a variety of pryethroid insecticides that can be used on mattresses. Pyrethins are natural pesticides extracted from Chrysanthemums and they are non-toxic to mammals and birds, but extremely toxic to fish and most insects. You can fumigate your mattress by using a plastic bag that can completely cover your mattress, and seal in the insecticide for a few days. U-Haul sells plastic mattress bags that are used for protecting mattresses while moving. You also need to get the bugs out of any cracks or hiding areas near the bed, and also in areas where pets sleep.

as far as I know there is a method that uses heat to kill all the bugs and eggs. The room will be heated to about 60 degrees Celsius (140° F) for a certain period of time. Another method will be chemistry - problem here: bedbugs have developed resistancy against certain chemical products. Both methods will have to be applied by a specialist.
Getting rid of the mattresses alone might not be sufficient because they can hide elsewhere in the bed or in the room and get into the new mattresses again.

Hmmm. I think you can only see them through a microscope. EVERYONE has them, if you are talking about bedbugs. You have to vacuum your bed, but you never get rid of all of them. They are there for a reason. All that dust in your room is mostly skin flakes. The bedbugs are there to eat that. You really didn't want to hear that now did you? Nature will always win no matter how distasteful it seems.

They make and sell plastic, sealed covers for mattresses for just that problem.
You slip the cover over the matress and zip it up and soon all the bedbugs and any others die off.
Call a couple of local stores that sell matresses and I'll bet they can help you.
