I have one of those filters that sucks up water and runs it through Bio balls and some black charcoal things (probably cabon, not sure) and some foam. Last time I cleaned my tank, I noticed the black charcoal had reduced in size so my filter is probably not as effective as it could be.

What exactly is this back stuff, so i know what to ask for at the store and should I replace the foam and balls as well? Should I replace them all together or would that get rid of all my benificial bacteria?

Is there anything else I should know when replacing my filter?

The black is activated carbon - it's similar to charcoal, but processed at a higher temperature. If you have a freshwater tank, it's really not necessary to use carbon/charcoal unless you are removing medication or have problems with discolored water (from having driftwood). That's not saying you can't use it, but it's not necessary, and just an added expense. You should always keep some on hand though for use with medications and to remove accidental introductions of harmful chemicals.

You don't need to replace the bioballs or foam - these are surfaces that the bacteria that convert the ammonia and nitrite to nitrate will live (also in your substrate in the tank). What you want to do here is to take some of the tank water in a clean container and rinse them if they're getting too much gunk built up. Never use tapwater for cleaning because the chlorine/chloramine will kill the bacteria. You can keep reusing these as long as they hold together.

You shouldn't replace everything coz the filter holds the whole bacteria system in your tank so just replace the part that needs to be replaced by itself! Its probably carbon but just take it out & bring it to the shop with you to be sure! Hope this helps x x x x x
