Catherine K had half the answer.
C refers to diamonds and other precious stones; it is a unit of weight. 2 Carats is always more than 1 Carat. A very heavy stone can be 100 Carats.
K refers to precious metals and is a measure of purity of the primary metal (gold); 28 Karat gold is nearly pure (as pure as one can expect). 24 Karat contains a proportion in the final alloy or blend of 24/28 of pure.
